Contrology
The Legacy of Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates created his method, which he called Contrology, out of a personal journey. Born sickly in Germany in 1883, he devoted his life to studying movement, breath, and the connection between body and mind.
During World War I, he began developing exercises that used resistance and control to help people heal and grow stronger. Later, in New York, he and his wife Clara opened their first studio, quickly becoming a secret training ground for dancers, athletes, and anyone seeking balance, strength, and vitality.
Joseph’s philosophy was more than exercise—it was a way of life. He believed in daily movement, proper breathing, and living in harmony with your body. His words still inspire today: “Change happens through movement, and movement heals.”

Life & Work
- Born in Germany (1883): Joseph was a sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. Because of this, he became determined to strengthen his body and studied anatomy, gymnastics, boxing, yoga, martial arts, and animal movement.
- World War I (1912–1918): He was interned in a camp in England as a German national. There, he started developing his exercise method, working with bedridden patients by attaching springs to hospital beds — the early inspiration for the Reformer.
- Contrology: He called his method Contrology — the art of consciously controlling body, mind, and spirit through movement, posture, and breath.
- Move to New York (1926): Together with his wife Clara, he opened a studio in New York City. The studio attracted dancers, actors, and athletes who valued his precise, rehabilitative, and strengthening approach.
- Philosophy / “Life Club” Spirit:
Joseph Pilates didn’t just teach exercises — he promoted a whole lifestyle of health, discipline, and daily practice. His “club” was less about membership and more about living the method:- Daily movement
- Correct breathing
- Mental focus
- Natural diet and balance
- Living in harmony with your body
- Legacy: Joseph died in 1967 at 83 years old. Today, what started as his personal “life club” has grown into a global community of millions practicing Pilates in studios, gyms, and homes around the world.
